How Much Do Actors Make?

May 2, 2019

Playing make pretend pays pretty damn good these days.  Variety listed what some of Hollywood’s biggest stars are getting paid for their most recent projects.

Certain figures might stand out to you like Joaquin Phoenix getting paid “only” $4.5 million for his highly anticipated Joker movie.  It might seem like he got a raw deal.  Especially when you compare it to Ben Affleck’s $8 million for a mediocre Netflix movie that came and went without much fanfare.  The key word here is “Netflix.”  What the article does a good job of explaining is the difference between the pay scale for a streaming picture versus a studio film.

Netflix pays their stars a flat rate regardless of how many people view the film.  If Ben’s making $8 million, that’s it.  If the Joker movie is as successful as most people predict, Joaquin’s take-home pay will grow depending on how much money the movie grosses in theaters and eventually, home entertainment.  For example, Robert Downey Jr. got paid around $20 million for Avengers: Infinity War but in the long run he ended up taking home around $75 million.  Long story short, everyone on this list is getting paid very, very well so don’t lose sleep over the pay gaps.

Jessica Chastain – It: Chapter 2 ($2.5 million)

Joaquin Phoenix – Joker ($4.5 million)

Martin Lawrence – Bad Boys For Life ($6 million)

Kristen Stewart – Charlie’s Angels ($7 million)

Ben Affleck – Triple Frontier ($8 million)

Idris Elba – Hobbs & Shaw ($8 million)

Margot Robbie – Birds of Prey ($9-10 million)

Leonardo DiCaprio – Once Upon A Time In Hollywood ($10 million)

Gal Gadot – Wonder Woman 1984 ($10 million)

Brad Pitt - Once Upon A Time In Hollywood ($10 million)

Emily Blunt – A Quiet Place 2 ($12-13 million)

Tom Cruise – Top Gun: Maverick ($12-14 million)

Jason Statham – Hobbs & Shaw ($13 million)

Will Smith – Bad Boys For Life ($17 million)

Robert Downey Jr. – The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle ($20 million)

Dwayne Johnson – Hobbs & Shaw ($20 million)

Ryan Reynolds – Six Underground ($27 million)
