Hip Hop In Video Games - Remember When Nelly Was In NBA Street Vol. 2? [VIDEO]

October 16, 2019

I’m going to drop these blogs combining two of my favorite things (hip hop and video games) from time to time on slow news days.  The two worlds have collided, with many rappers making cameos or appearing as playable characters in a bunch of video games over the years - so each blog will highlight one such occasion.  Today’s featured artist is Nelly, who appeared in the 2002 video game NBA Street Vol 2.

The street ball game was available on PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox.  The NBA Street series was kind of like NBA Jam with way more swag and style.  It’s also different from NBA Jam in that games were 3-on-3 rather than 2-on-2 and featured way more game modes.  The game featured all NBA rosters from the time as well as unlockable characters including NBA legend Larry Bird, and hip hop acts like Just Blaze, the St. Lunatics and their fearless leader, Nelly.

The soundtrack was tight too.  Featured artists included Nelly (duh), Nate Dogg, Eve, Redman, Benzino, MC Lyte, Black Sheep, Dilated Peoples and Talib Kweli.

PS… If you pay close attention, in this gameplay video of Nelly and the St. Lunatics vs. the New York Rulers you’ll notice Seattle’s Green Lake has a playable court in the game.  Totally forgot about that.  I might have to find someone with a PlayStation 2 just so I can run a few games with friends on a Saturday afternoon sometime soon.
